Description
Klonopin is an antiepileptic product from the group of the derived benzodiazepine which contains the active ingredient Clonazepam.
The mechanism of the pharmacological action is similar to the action of tranquilizers. The therapeutic effect happens due to the reduction of the agitation of the central nervous system.
Klonopin provides a strong anticonvulsive, central myorelaxing, anxiolytic, and sedative action. The motion activity of muscles and nerves is reduced under the action of the medicine, and so that a complete relaxing effect is achieved. The action of Klonopin begins in 30-60 minutes after the use, and the therapeutic effect appears in 2-3 hours.
The anticonvulsive activity of Klonopin is higher in comparison with tranquilizers, and therefore this product is often used during the treatment of the convulsive states. However, due to the intense sedative action, there are some restrictions during the use of the medicine.
Directions for the use
Klonopin is prescribed during pathologies of the central nervous system of the various severity:
epilepsy in adults and children
nodding spasms
Tonic seizures
Infantile spasms
simple and complex partial seizures
psychomotor agitation
insomnia
muscular hypertonicity
panic disorder
Usage and dosage
The treatment begins from the minimal doses in order to prove sensitivity of the body to the action of Clonazepam. If the side effects are absent, the dose of Klonopin can be gradually increased.
The adult patients are recommended the treatment from the minimal dose of Klonopin 0,5 mg 3 times per day
The dose of Klonopin can be increased by 0,5-1 mg every 4-5 days
The maintaining daily dose of Klonopin is 4-8 mg 3 times
If a fast effect is required during severe convulsive conditions, the maximal daily dose of Klonopin 20 mg can be used 3-4 times per day
Klonopin dose for children
Children under 1 year are recommended 0,1-1 mg per day
Children at the age of 1 to 5 are recommended 1,5-3 mg per day
Children at the age of 6 to 16 are recommended 3 to 6 mg per day
The dose can be adjusted depending on the patient’s age, body weight, and also an individual sensitivity to the active ingredients.
Patients over 65 years are recommended to take the minimal daily dose 05,-1 mg per day. In case of the diseases of kidneys/liver, the dose should be individual.
Side effects
The side effects of Klonopin are related to the pharmacological action of the medicine. The side effects usually appear in the central nervous system: intense retardation, fatigue, sleepiness, apathy, dizziness, entrance, and headaches.
Dyspepsia, high/low blood pressure, tachycardia, and low libido may also happen. The side effects may appear within entire treatment, and therefore it is necessary to be cautious and refuse from the potentially dangerous types of the activity.
Overdose symptoms
During overdose, the side effects of Klonopin related to the inhibition of the central nervous system are increased. Sleepiness will be severe, tremor, vomiting, and allergic reaction will appear, and heart and respiratory activity will be inhibited.
In case of the overdose symptoms, it is necessary to have a stomach lavage and seek for a medial aid.
